With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, it’s filling some of us with a sense of dread. For many, V-day is almost as ominous as D-day. But it doesn’t have to be that way. With so many marriages failing, is being single and waiting for the one such a bad option? Here are five ways to celebrate being single on Valentine’s Day.
Pamper yourself
Spoil yourself on Valentine’s Day whether you’re pampering yourself at a spa, spending the whole day shopping or reinventing yourself with a new hairstyle. Alternatively buy yourself a piece of jewellery to commemorate the day. This could be a cocktail ring, some fun costume jewellery, the vintage piece you have had your eye on or something elegant from Tiffany & Co. It doesn’t have to be expensive but it does have to reflect you as a person and have meaning. Giving yourself a makeover on Valentine’s Day, indulging yourself and practising self love is the perfect way to spend the day. Just because your single doesn’t mean you don’t deserve a big bunch of red roses, consider sending yourself some Valentine’s Day Flowers this February.
Go on a girl’s or guy’s night out
Organise your single mates and go out on a night out. There will be plenty of likeminded singles who will have the same idea and be out and about looking for love. Valentine’s Day is no time to sit at home and moan about not having a partner. Spend it with friends that you care about and equally care about you and who knows you might meet someone special in the process. Clued-on event organisers are targeting singles on Valentine’s Day and holding events like speed dating and singles nights.
Spend time with your family
What better way to spend Valentine’s Day then to spend it with people who love you unconditionally and want the best for you. Spend quality time with your loved ones either going out for a nice family dinner, watching a movie at the local cinema or having a quiet DVD night at home or take your beloved pet for a walk around the block. Your family will enjoy the company and you will feel fulfilled and loved up and adored on Valentine’s Day.
Make someone else’s day
Instead of spending the day wallowing in self pity, do some volunteer work and spend time with people who are less fortunate than you. You could offer to babysit for your neighbours or your family members who have young children so they can have a much needed night out or alternatively, go to a nursing home and spend time with the elderly who have no one to visit them.
Adopt a pet
If you have been flirting with the idea of pet ownership for a while now, this may be the ideal time to pick out a pet. Pet ownership has many benefits such as constant, loyal companionship and proven physical, psychological and health benefits. Instead of buying a kitten or a puppy at a pet shop, go to your local animal shelter where there are a lot of preloved animals waiting to be cared for by a family and in need of your love and affection.
Don’t be afraid to show yourself some self-love on Valentine’s Day, bask in your post-Valentine’s day glow and rejoice in your singledom. Valentine’s Day can be a day of joy, hope and happiness for the savvy single – it’s all about your perspective. Remember, the next worst thing to spending Valentine’s Day alone is spending it with the wrong person so this Valentine’s Day, spend it with people you love.
